EVENT OFFERS ADVICE FOR THOSE WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY AND VULNERABLE IN GLOUCESTER

October 24 2006

People who work with the elderly and vulnerable are being urged to take part in a training event being run by the Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) next week.

The event, Caring for the Elderly, will cover a variety of issues that affect the lives of the elderly in the hope that practitioners and carers will be more aware of facilities available in the city.

It is being held at Oxstalls Indoor Tennis Centre in Gloucester on Tuesday, October 31, and speakers will cover a variety of issues from Distraction Burglary and Keeping Out Rogue Traders to Fire Safety for the Elderly, The Primary Mental Healthcare View and Welfare Benefits for the Elderly.

Distraction burglary and rogue traders are both a cause for concern with the police and Gloucestershire Trading Standards as elderly people can easily be the target.

However there are means to stop these crimes and the CDRP are anxious to spread the message as widely as possible - at the event the CDRP will be providing advice and information for practitioners to share with their elderly clients.

The event will give information from the Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the City Council’s Welfare Benefits Take Up Team in an attempt to raise awareness of what to look out for and what help is available.

There will also be displays of security products and an information stand of opportunities for older people to express their lives, their situations and their aspirations through creative arts.

Chair of the CDRP, Derek Cross, said: "This is an excellent event where practitioners can learn more about the facilities that are available to enhance the lives of our elderly residents. By working together we can make a difference."

The event starts at 9.15am on October 31 and is to be held at the Oxstalls Tennis Centre, Plock Court, Tewkesbury Road.

The event is free to attend but reservations must be made. If you are a practitioner or carer working with elderly people, please contact Angela Ingram on 01452 396284 to book a place.
