CRIME REDUCTION EXPERTS TO APPEAR IN GLOUCESTER CROWN COURT

November 22 2006

Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) will be attending the Court Open Day on Saturday 25th November, giving advice and information of how to reduce crime in Gloucester.

Members of the CDRP will be on hand at the Crown Court in Longsmith Street from 10 am - 2 pm to postcode mobile phones and bicycles as well as giving away the remainder of their 2007 Crime Prevention Calendars.

A key feature of the CDRP stand at this event will be to reduce car crime. Tax disc holders will be available for visitors to the stand that give the reminder to drivers to "Lock your vehicle" and "Remove valuables", whilst telling any possible thieves "Don’t Bother. All valuables have been removed from this vehicle".

Crime Reduction Officer from the Forest and Gloucester Division of Gloucestershire Constabulary PC Kevin Ireland said "In the run up to Christmas the need to lock your vehicle and to remove all valuable items is never more important. With Christmas shopping, it is tempting to return to your vehicle with purchases and then go back to the shops to buy more presents. Leaving valuables on display makes your vehicle an easy and enticing target for an opportunist thief who will take advantage of people’s relaxed attitudes during the festive season.

"Incidents of thefts from motor vehicles have reduced for 3 consecutive years in Gloucester and we are committed to working with residents to continue that downward trend."

Derek Cross, Chair of the Gloucester CDRP said "The Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership is constantly working to reduce vehicle crime.

We ask all residents to take care to protect their property and not leave any items on display in parked cars, even if they are being left for a very short time. Thieves are opportunists and we all need to work together to reduce crime."

The CDRP will be joined at the Crown Court by the Gloucester Crime Prevention Panel, a group of public minded volunteers who believe "Prevention is better than cure - especially in the matter of crime". The Panel assist the CDRP at many community events: postcoding bicycles and mobile phones and giving door-to-door help and advice in areas where specific crime has risen. The Panel will be advertising their role at the event and seeking new volunteers to join them. If you feel that this is something that may interest you, please visit the stand on Saturday or telephone PC Kevin Ireland on 0845 090 1234.
