FREE BIKE LOCKS AND SECURITY CODING TO BE GIVEN OUT AT MORELAND FUN DAY
May 15 2007
Free security advice and bike locks are to be given out by Gloucester Police on Saturday at Moreland Fun Day.
Crime Reduction Officers along with members of the Gloucester Crime Prevention Panel will be present at Calton Junior School Field security coding bikes.
And anybody who brings along his or her bike to be coded will receive a free bicycle lock.
PC Kevin Ireland, Crime Reduction Officer for the Forest and Gloucester division, said: "Items that are easy to steal, such as bicycles and mobile phones are often the main target of thieves, but writing your post code on them with a special coding pen can help deter them from trying to steal it.
"Thieves hate traceable items and as a majority of theft is opportunist they can often be put off by thinking a crime can be traced back to them."
And he added that any property stolen that had a code would make it easier for officers to return it to its owners.
"Such a simple procedure can have a big impact and I would encourage anybody attending the fun day on Saturday to take advantage of this great opportunity," he said
Moreland in the Map kicks off at midday and is being held as a community consultation event in the run up to the Not in My Neighbourhood Week, which will be held between October 15 and 21 as part of the Changing Lives Making Communities Safer Home Office campaign.
This Campaign aims to demonstrate that significant progress is being made to tackle crime, drugs, alcohol and anti-social behaviour.
Organised by Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP), the City Council Neighbourhood Partnership’s Team and the Police Linden Safer Communities Team, the event hopes to further increase community spirit in the area.
Over the last three years, crime has reduced dramatically in the area with vehicle crime and robbery down by approximately 70%.
Many residents are organising games and stands, with local school children and young people’s organisations providing the entertainment.
The Linden Safer Communities Police Team will also be challenging young footballers from The Bizz, Star 66 youth club to a Moreland 5 aside cup final match with trophies provided by Gloucestershire Housing Association.
Other sponsors of the event are Gloucester City Homes, Midcounties Cooperative, CDRP, Gloucester City Council and the Government Office for the South West. Many local businesses are kindly donating prizes for the free raffle attached to a residents survey - a full list of those who have donated gifts will be displayed at the event.
