Lock Your Bikes! Code Your Bikes!

July 12 2006

Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership will be at Quedgeley Show, in Severn Vale School on the afternoon of Saturday 15th July, security post-coding bicycles in the fight against crime. The CDRP, including members of the Crime Prevention Panel will also be giving away a free bicycle lock to anyone who brings their bicycle for coding as well as advice on storing your bicycle securely at all times.

Crime Reduction Officer PC Kevin Ireland said, “People are often very careful about securing their bicycles whilst parking them in the city centre to do shopping or visiting friends. In addition to this we would like everyone to take every precaution whilst leaving their bicycle parked at home, in their garage or shed. It only takes an extra moment to secure a bicycle and we are inviting residents to come along to the CDRP stand and take advantage of security post-coding their bicycle and receiving a free bicycle lock at the same time.”

The CDRP will also be promoting their “Trap Bike” initiative, inviting visitors to their stand to add a sticker to their bicycle which says “Is this the TRAP BIKE?”. Gloucester Police are currently using a “Trap Bike” which is set in first gear to attract would be thieves. The bicycle is parked in a public place in the city where it may be attractive to thieves, and then using CCTV cameras and hidden tracking devices, officers can locate the bicycle, often on foot patrol.

Bill Crowther, Chair of the CDRP said, “This is another excellent initiative where the Partnership is assisting residents of Gloucester to protect their property. Bicycle theft is an important issue and we are asking everyone to take every precaution to safeguard their cycles.”
