Trolley “Coins” at Fire Station

July 12 2006

Members of Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, including the Crime Prevention Panel, will be giving out trolley “coins” at Gloucester Fire Station Open Day in Eastern Avenue, on Sunday afternoon 20th August. The substitute £1 coins, featuring the Gloucester CDRP logo and website address are for use in supermarket trolleys, gym lockers, or anywhere where a £1 coin is needed. By using the CDRP “coins” which are on a key ring, residents are able to avoid getting out their purses in public places like supermarket car parks where they could become victims of robbery.

Crime Reduction Officer PC Kevin Ireland said, “ The trolley coins are all part of the CDRP’s fight against crime. Thieves are opportunists and when someone is distracted in a supermarket car park looking in a purse, they could become a victim. However, the chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime is low, but you can make yourself even less likely to be the victim by taking a few sensible precautions.

The CDRP has produced a leaflet “Safe….. Not Sorry” with advice on personal safety, with useful tips for when using mobile phones or cash machines, when driving, or using public transport. These leaflets along with other advice and information will be available on Sunday.

Once again the CDRP will be postcoding bicycles and will be giving a free bicycle lock to anyone who has their bike security coded.

In addition to the community safety stand, the CDRP will be hosting a mini moto information stand with the latest updates of Police enforcement activity. This summer the Gloucester CDRP has taken part in the Home Office’s Respect Taskforce programme to relieve neighbourhoods of the noise and nuisance of mini motos. This information stand has toured Gloucester to advise residents of the legal and safety aspects of using mini motos. Generally the advice is, they can only be used on private land with the express permission of the landowner. They are illegal to be ridden or pushed on roads, pathways or public open space unless they are road legal – with the proper tax, insurance and MOT.

CDRP Chair, Derek Cross of the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said, “ The Fire Service is pleased to welcome members of the CDRP and Crime Prevention Panel to the open day on Sunday. This is a good opportunity to work together to share community safety information and advice. The CDRP strives to make Gloucester a safer place to live, work and visit and we hope that by working together in partnership our campaigns can make a real difference.”
