SUNFLOWER COMPETITION WINNERS HELP KICK-OFF ‘NOT IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEK’ IN MORELAND

11 October 2007

Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership are delighted to announce the winners of their ‘Grow the tallest sunflower in Moreland’ competition.

In the children’s section the winner was 9 year old Lashay Grinter with a 10’4" sunflower, followed by 6 year old Samuel Sharpe with a 9’4" flower and in third place Jessica Watson with a 7’6" flower.

The winner in the adult’s section was Chris Healey with a massive 12’6" sunflower. Trophies will be presented to the winners at the CDRP’s Not in my Neighbourhood Open Morning at the Lighthouse Children's Centre, Linden Road by the Mayor of Gloucester Cllr Harjit Gill.

The Open Morning will be held between 10am and 1pm. Attending will be many of the agencies that work in Moreland to help keep residents safe. A light lunch will be served at midday and Alfredo the Clown will be there to entertain the kids.

The Open Morning sees the start of ‘Not in my Neighbourhood Week’ in the Moreland area of the city. This week of events aims to communicate to residents the work local agencies are doing to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Moreland, and the impact this is having. The week aims to improve people’s awareness of the action being taken, with the aim of helping them to feel safe in their community.

The sunflower competition was an innovative way of spreading a crime prevention message. Each packet of seeds that was given out had a shed and garden security message displayed on it.
