Advice For Those Working With The Elderly And Vulnerable in Gloucester
February 2008
Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) are hosting a training event for anyone working or volunteering with the elderly or vulnerable.
The event, Caring for the Elderly, will cover a variety of issues that affect the lives of the elderly in the hope that practitioners and carers will be more aware of facilities available in the city.
It is being held at the Ramada Hotel, Matson Lane, Gloucester, on Wednesday 5th March 2008. Speakers will include Marilyn Barrett, National Crime Prevention Officer, Derbyshire Constabulary and Leanne Town from Severn Trent Water Authority and will cover a variety of issues from Distraction Burglary and Keeping Out Rogue Traders to Assistance with Security, Support for Victims, Fire Safety for the Elderly and Welfare Benefits for the Elderly.
Distraction burglary and rogue traders are a cause for concern for both the Police and Gloucestershire Trading Standards as elderly people can be the target. However there are means to stop these crimes and the CDRP are anxious to spread the message as widely as possible. At the event on 5th March officers from the CDRP will be providing advice and information for practitioners and carers to share with their elderly clients and to inform them what support is available to elderly people in Gloucester.
There will also be displays from the CDRP, Neighbourhood Watch Association, Gloucestershire Fire Service and Gloucestershire Warm and Well.
Forest and Gloucester Division's Detective Chief Inspector Steve Porter said, “ We are keen to inform our elderly residents of all the crime prevention and home security and safety measures that are available. This event is an excellent way of passing the message on through practitioners and carers who can remind their clients not to open the door to unexpected visitors or allow them into their homes and not to keep large quantities of cash in their home. I would encourage all practitioners and carers to take the time to attend the Ramada Hotel if at all possible and take advantage of the advice and information available.”
The event starts at 9.15 am on March 5th and will close at 13.00 hours with a light lunch.
The event is free to attend but reservations must be made. If you are a practitioner or carer working with elderly people, please contact Angela Hathaway on 01452 396284 to book a place.
