EVENT CELEBRATES CRIME REDUCTION IN GLOUCESTER

November 01 2006

The Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) will be holding their annual Community Safety event at the start of next week.

The popular event will be held in The Mall, Eastgate Shopping Centre, from November 7-9.

The event is always a popular one with residents and visitors. Members of the CDRP, assisted by the Crime Prevention Panel, will be giving out leaflets, advice and information on crime prevention.

They will also be security post-coding mobile phones and there will be displays of CDRP activity as well as a replica drugs case.

The CDRP have again had 2,000 of their renowned calendars printed - each month with a seasonal crime prevention message - to give away whilst stocks last.

The organisation is also celebrating a further reduction in many crimes in Gloucester.

Overall, targeted high volume crimes (including robbery, burglary - both domestic and businesses - and theft from motor vehicles) have reduced in the first six months of this year by over 200 incidents, building on an already reducing trend.

"Although crime is reducing in Gloucester, there will be no let up on our part to drive down crime and anti-social behaviour still further and provide a better quality of life for our communities," said Pc Kevin Ireland, Crime Reduction Officer for the Forest and Gloucester division.

"We also need information from the public on who is committing crime, so I would encourage anyone who can support us in providing that information to ring us on 0845 090 1234 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Derek Cross, Chair of the CDRP, said: "We want to share the good news of this reduction with residents. We are keen to work with communities in reducing crime and this is an excellent way of hearing the concerns of residents and looking at how we can address their crime related issues."

In order to support the City Council’s "No ifs, No Butts’ campaign to stop smokers dropping cigarette butts in the street (for which they can face a fine of £75), the CDRP are handing out mini bins for containing cigarette stubs or chewing gum. The mini bins, which are reusable, contain the message "Help stub out crime" and the CDRP logo and website address.
